Individual Play Therapy

Initial Contact

We will have an informal chat over the phone to decide together if Play Therapy is an appropriate therapeutic intervention for your child.

Parent/ Carer

Consultation

A consultation is arranged following initial contact over the phone. These consultations can be done online via zoom or in person in my therapy room. I strongly advise both parents/ carers to attend these meetings, where possible.

During this meeting I will answer any questions you may have. We will then contract for a minimum of 12 sessions, as per best practice guidelines.

Play Therapy Sessions

Therapy sessions usually last 40 minutes and take place at the same time each week. Parents and carers are welcome to sit in at the beginning of our first session, this allows the child to become comfortable with both myself and my playroom.

Developing trust will be the main focus of our first few sessions. As our therapeutic relationship grows, opportunities to gently draw attention to feelings or emotional content and more directive approaches are used when appropriate.

Review Meetings

At week 10, I will schedule a review with you to assess your child’s progress to date. During this review, we will discuss the next step for your child, whether it be continuing the sessions as planned, adding extra sessions, or ending the sessions early.

You may request additional review meetings.

Endings

Beginnings and endings can be tricky for children as they evoke strong emotions. The way in which we experience endings earlier in life will influence how we experience endings later in life. It is crucial that your child’s play therapy process comes to an end in a safe, planned and predictable manner.

In our last session, your child and I will reflect on our time spent together, we will look at the highs and lows, identifying any areas of growth and self discovery, empowering the child to bring their new learning out into their daily lives.
